Protect a tooth before it breaks

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, restoring its shape, strength and look. Crowns are used for teeth that are cracked, badly decayed, worn down, or weakened by a large filling or a root canal.

Each crown is color-matched to your other teeth, so it blends in when you smile. Crowns can also hold a bridge, which replaces a missing tooth by joining a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side.

How a dental crown is made and placed

  1. 1

    Exam and X-rays

We check the tooth and the root beneath it, and explain why a crown is the right fix.

  2. 2

    Shaping the tooth

The area is numbed, then the tooth is gently shaped so the crown can fit over it.

  3. 3

    Digital scan

A digital scan of your teeth takes the place of most messy impressions, and the shade is matched to your smile.

  4. 4

    Temporary crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth while your permanent crown is made.

  5. 5

    Your permanent crown

We check the fit, your bite and the color, then bond your crown firmly in place.

Signs a tooth may need a crown

A crown is often the best way to save a tooth that's too damaged for a filling.

  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • A large cavity, or an old filling that's breaking down
  • A back tooth that's had a root canal
  • Teeth worn down from grinding
  • A discolored or misshapen tooth you'd like to cover

Dental Crowns FAQs

Many dental crowns last ten years or more with good care: brushing, flossing, regular checkups, and a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Getting a dental crown shouldn't hurt. The tooth is numbed before it's shaped, and most people feel only mild sensitivity for a few days afterward.

Getting a dental crown usually takes two visits a couple of weeks apart: one to shape and scan the tooth, and one to place the finished crown. You wear a temporary crown in between.

A dental crown is usually recommended after a root canal, especially on a back tooth, because a treated tooth can become brittle. The crown protects it from cracking.

Dental crowns can be made of porcelain, ceramic, metal, or porcelain fused to metal. Tooth-colored crowns look the most natural, and Dr. Ahdout will recommend the best material for each tooth.

A dental crown covers one damaged tooth. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. A dental implant is another way to replace a missing tooth.

Take care of a dental crown the way you care for your natural teeth: brush twice a day, floss around it every day, and keep up regular checkups. Avoid chewing ice or other hard objects, and ask about a night guard if you grind your teeth.

The cost of a dental crown depends on the tooth, the material and your insurance, which often covers part of it. You'll get a clear price before any work begins.
