A toothache that won't quit, swelling in your face or gums, a cracked or knocked-out tooth, or a crown that's come off: these are dental emergencies, and they shouldn't wait. Call the office, tell us what's happening, and we'll find the soonest time to see you.
Our first job is getting you out of pain. Then we'll explain what caused the problem and the options for fixing it properly.

Tell us what happened and how you're feeling. We'll give you advice for right now and find a time to see you.
- 2
Seen as soon as possible
We keep room in the schedule for urgent problems, so you're not left waiting days.
- 3
Find the cause
An exam and X-rays show what's behind the pain, whether it's a cavity, a crack, an infection or an injury.
- 4
Relief first
We focus on stopping the pain and protecting the tooth, with the area numbed so you're comfortable.
- 5
A plan for the fix
Once you're comfortable, we explain the options for a lasting repair and what each one involves.
Before you get here
A few simple steps can protect your tooth until you're in the chair.
- Knocked-out tooth: hold it by the top, not the root, and rinse it gently. Put it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk, and call right away.
- Broken tooth: rinse with warm water and save any pieces.
- Lost filling or crown: keep the crown if you have it. Dental cement from a pharmacy can cover the tooth until your visit.
- Swelling: hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek.
- Call 911 or go to the ER if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or bleeding won't stop.

A dental emergency is any tooth or mouth problem that needs care quickly: severe or lasting tooth pain, swelling or a painful bump on the gum (often an abscess, a type of infection), an injury to the mouth, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or bleeding that won't stop. If you're not sure, call and we'll help you decide.
If a tooth gets knocked out, hold it by the top, not the root, rinse it gently, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it in milk and call a dentist right away. Acting fast gives the best chance of saving it, as the ADA's emergency guide explains.
Go to the ER or call 911 for a dental emergency with swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, a high fever with facial swelling, a serious injury, or bleeding that won't stop. For most tooth problems, call us first.
We do our best to see dental emergencies as soon as possible, often the same day. Call early and tell us it's an emergency.
If you have a dental emergency after hours, call the office number first. If we can't take your call, follow the steps on this page, and go to the ER for anything serious.
Yes. You don't need to be an existing patient to call us about a dental emergency.
Yes. Sometimes a knocked-out, badly broken or infected tooth can't be saved and has to be removed. When that happens, a dental implant can replace it with a tooth that looks and works like your own.
